Dyer’s polypore (Phaeolus schweinitzii) are very common on conifer trees. They can grow in shelves on wood or as rosettes out of the ground (on roots). They are inedible, bitter, and mildly toxic but they can be used to dye fabrics (this the name). The fresh growth is fuzzy and yellow but turns brown and hard as they mature. Fun to see it engulf the fern, in a phenomenon known as haptomorphism when indeterminate mushrooms can grow around and absorb object into themselves. ...#dyerspolypore #phae
